In a sad commentary on the currently disintegrating state of "main stream media", I found myself ambushed on Saturday, March 6th, just ten minutes after I arrived at a conference outside Philadelphia on "9-11, the Wars and Our Broken Constitution".
When young, smiling female producer Katie Hinman identified herself as being with ABC and asked for an interview, I had only just arrived at the conference. So although I was a little surprised that the Nightline TV crew was there, I immediately consented to an interview before anyone had a chance to warn me that the TV show was trying to concoct a connection between the conference and the mentally ill young man who had been killed a few days before while shooting at Pentagon guards.
From the very first question Mr. Bury launched, it was clear, however, that he was not interested in the truth, and that I would not fare any better than someone who consents to go on Bill O’Reilly’s or Glenn Beck’s show.
In the interest of journalistic ethics, let me list a few of the departures from how a decent, ethical, objective journalist would have covered the story of this conference:
- Chris Bury and his news crew left right after interviewing me. They apparently only spent a couple hours at the conference that morning (before I arrived) and did not interview any of the sick 9-11 rescue workers or 9-11 victim family members. It turns out that while castigating the victims’ quest for more facts about 9-11, they had refused to interview these folks!
- Bury did not let me answer any of his questions, but repeatedly cut me off after I got only a couple words out. He asked totally leading questions using loaded terms with pejorative connotations like "conspiracy" in connection with the search for facts and evidence. Within a couple minutes, it was clear that Nightline’s Chris Bury was only interested in furthering his pre-determined agenda and conducting a hit type interrogation just as Bill O’Reilly, Rush Limbaugh and other radio-TV talk shows are fond of doing.
- Of course Chris Bury and his Nightline crew did not stay to hear my presentation on the terrible consequences of the lack of 9-11 truth — the series of post 9-11 mistakes — nor did they stay to hear any of the other speakers. It’s been said that "truth is the first casualty of war" and there were many other visual displays and speakers, like myself, who made that point about why the truth matters. In fact when I tried to counter Bury’s disparaging line of questioning, by asking why and how it came to be when Bush-Cheney launched their preemptive invasion of Iraq, that 70% of Americans mistakenly believed that Saddam was behind 9-11, Bury did not answer. Nightline edited out my questions of course about this massive deception as well as the rest of my interview in what they chose to air.
- The Nightline crew appeared so intent on vilification but it missed my presentation on "Truth–the Dribs and Drabs" as well as other speakers’ presentations on questions about inconsistencies in the NORAD time lime, the level of pre 9-11 intelligence that existed, and the actual motivations of the 9-11 hijackers (that involve the illegal Israeli settlements and Israel’s handling of Palestinians instead of Bush’s glib answer "they hate our freedoms").
- If Chris Bury and his ABC producer had attended the full two days of this conference, they would have failed to find one single call for violence in any of the presentations. They would have found just the opposite. Of course that would have conflicted with Nightline’s sensationalist angle, stretching to connect the young troubled Pentagon shooter to calls for further investigation of 9-11. Their outrageous proposition was that anyone who asks questions about the momentously tragic event is dangerous.
What Would Gandhi Do?
For many years, I’ve had this little magnet on my refrigerator with a picture of Mahatma Gandhi which says "Truth is the highest God." What that means to me is that although it’s impossible to fully know the truth (as it is to know "God"), truth is a very worthy pursuit!
So maybe it wouldn’t do much good but we ought to send some of these refrigerator magnets to Bill O’Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, and all those sensationalist Gonzo journalists like Chris Bury to remind them not to forsake their own integrity and their 4th estate responsibilities. The truth really does matter.

The Malicously Orchestrated Derailing of a Surging Constitutionalist Candidate

Well, congrats, Texas! You’ve once again voted for more of the same. You’ve voted for the status quo. You’ve once again tipped your collective cowboy hat to the establishment with a wink and a nod and said, “You’re not doing so bad.” And we wonder ad nauseam why things just NEVER seem to ever get any better. When are you going to wake up? Does our society have to completely implode and collapse like Argentina, Iceland, Greece and numerous other countries caught in the game of international “high finance” before you realize that we’re all just pawns in a very sophisticated and sick game of psychological brinkmanship being played by the global “elite”? The very same global “elite” who welcomed your governor “Slick” Rick Perry with open arms (and thereby violating the Logan Act) to the 2007 secretive Bilderberg Group meeting in Istanbul, Turkey? I’m sorry, but I really don’t feel ANY of our elected leaders should be attending any “super-secret” meeting to discuss anything in private outside of the awareness of the voters who put him in office. Especially since we’re all sure one of the topics discussed was the selling of our taxpayer paid-for toll roads to foreign corporations. Congratulations, indeed.
And how exactly did this happen? Well, let’s all go back a few weeks and look at the sudden rise of an upstart Constitutional candidate who seemed to have come out of nowhere to win both of the Republican gubernatorial debates. I am referring to Debra Medina who went from virtual obscurity to become a major threat to the establishment candidates in the matter of weeks by speaking to “We Texans” as a hard-working Texan herself. I originally started out to write an open letter to Mrs. Medina herself and all of her supporters when I realized I would mostly be preaching to the choir. No, the problem goes much deeper than that to a pervasive belief which runs rampant in the minds of Republicans nationwide. So this letter is to not only all Texas Republicans, but to all citizens of the great state of Texas. And everyone else around the country and the world, well, it pertains to you as well. This pervasive belief of which I speak refers to the fateful and tragic events surrounding September 11th, 2001. The date after which we were told, the “world would never be the same.” Well, it hasn’t been. Things have only gotten progressively worse. They were right on that one.
And why, you may ask yourself, would 9/11 have anything to do with the race for governor of Texas? Good question. Keep asking yourself that one as I explain further. Debra Medina was polling in the 4% range up until the first gubernatorial debate on January 14th. After this debate, the buzz was on. Who was this woman who dared stand up to the establishment and call them out on their lies? Who was this woman who proposed to eliminate property taxes and return private property rights to their owners? Who was this woman who dared get her ideas from, God forbid, the Constitution?! Her ideas and her solutions to the problems facing not only Texans, but all Americans whose states have surrendered their authority to an overreaching and increasingly oppressive centralized federal government were music to the ears of those who have quite frankly had enough of the “elected” officials in the District of Criminals. She was one of us. And the polls showed it. She went from 4% to 25% in a matter of weeks by appealing to the common sense of the conservative base in Texas. It seemed she was on track to go into March 2nd with strong enough support to at least garner enough votes to force a run-off election with Rick Perry. This would have given her more time and momentum to grow her support as her message of freedom, small government and a return to prosperity could have taken her to the Republican nomination. So what went so wrong? How did this wild card only end up with 19% of the vote when all was said and done. Two words: Glenn Beck.
But how did one man who stakes no claim to Texas, has no interest in or should even play a role in influencing the voters of a sovereign state hundreds of miles from where he lives play such an influential part in what could have been a major victory for freedom, the Constitution and the entire nation itself? He ambushed her with a question completely out of left field concerning 9/11. 9/11 has nothing to do with Texas, nothing to do with the governor’s race or anything to do with the well being of Texans. So why did he bring it up in the first place? It’s because that’s what he is paid to do. All you have to do is go back to late 2007 just after Ron Paul supporters had raised over $6.5 Million for his campaign in a single day. A national single day record from individual donors. It was Glenn Beck who came on the scene to pronounce Ron Paul supporters as “terrorists” for using the term ‘money bomb’ in its fund-raising efforts and equate anyone supporting Ron Paul as some sort of lunatic fringe faction of society. Shortly thereafter, the entire media jumped on the bandwagon to demonize, marginalize and derail the Ron Paul rEVOLution. Truth and freedom, it seems, is a MAJOR threat to the establishment.
So Debra Medina is rolling right along, gaining support by the day as word spreads that we actually have a CHOICE in the upcoming election other than career politicians who have lied over and over and sold out their constituency to the highest bidder. This was making Perry nervous so something had to be done. Enter the right-wing, Neocon assassin of any populist candidate, Glenn Beck. The utter hypocrisy of this man is so overwhelming, I seriously can’t believe people still take his word for anything. Yeah, so he tells you the truth about so many things that are right about our country. He supposedly supports the Constitution and bashes the left and the liberals for the socialists the really are. Yeah, he’s one of us, right? Wrong. If he really was the person he claims himself to be and lived up to the status his followers bestow upon him, than he out of anyone out there, should have been Debra Medina’s most ardent supporter!! But no.
Again, folks, this is a game. And good old cry-baby Beck is nothing more than an over-paid operative in the game of political intrigue. He is a Judas goat. He is a Benedict Arnold. He is the consummate “wolf in sheeps clothing.” He is there to act. He is there to put on a show that will gain the massive support of the fed up masses by giving you the truth you want to hear. And then he is there to betray that trust you have given him and quietly slit your throat. If you can’t see that by now, well, go back to sleep and enjoy that next glass of Kool-Aid.
If you have seen through his little game, then you may be asking yourself, why is it that the 9/11 issue is such a divisive issue amongst the Republican base in America? Well, the answer to this question is not only the key to saving our Republic, but it may be the key to stopping World War III before it starts. And it all begins with awareness. Awareness of the TRUTH as to what really happened on that fateful day.
Do I know what happened? No. But so many people in our country have bought the official story hook, line and sinker, that they will defend their belief and the government who created that belief to their grave. However, if the official story was the truth, than why are there so many millions of intelligent, bright, well-meaning and honest people around the world still questioning the official story 8 years after the fact? Is it perhaps because there is overwhelming proof and mountains of evidence that the official story is a fabrication of lies and disinformation designed to keep the public from discovering the real orchestrators of the biggest mass murder on American soil in our history? And why is it that whenever anyone asks the questions, they are immediately labeled as a kook, a loon, or simply a crazy “conspiracy theorist”? Good question. What is it “they” have to hide? Why haven’t the hundreds of questions been answered? Since when did free speech in America and questioning our government become something with which to attack people? Where did it all go so wrong?
If you listen to the interview in which Glenn Beck, (who had never once interviewed Debra Medina before) within the matter of 10 minutes ambushed and effectively derailed the campaign of a Constitutional candidate, you can hear the condescension in his voice from the get go. He had no interest in getting to know her, understand her platform or inform his listeners. He was belittling her from the start and just waiting for the chance to pounce on her with his loaded question about being a 9/11 “truther”. In her defense, she handled herself quite well given the surprise of the question to begin with . She then went on in successive interviews to defend her response as well as the right of Americans to question the government. Her donations went through the roof from those who saw the Beck interview for what it was; an ambush and a set-up to do exactly what it did. However, the damage was done. It derailed her up-to-this-point impressive and well-run campaign. The momentum completely sputtered.
From that point on, her campaign was in damage-control mode as all the Glenn Becktoids out there withdrew their support for someone who would dare contradict the widely held belief that 9/11 was perpetrated by 19 crazy Muslims who “hated us for our freedom.” After all, Glenn went on to laugh at her and make those cute little noises he makes implying she was somehow “crazy” for responding in the honest way she did. It was beyond pathetic and thousands saw through the façade. In the meantime, however, she had lost tens of thousands of votes from the Beck-worshipping, RINO base of the Texas GOP.
In an effort to regain the percentage points lost, she then went on to put the final nail in the coffin of her campaign as she threw a huge portion of her base who still supported her under the bus in an interview with “conservative” talk show host, Mark David, out of Dallas, TX. In this interview which aired on February 18th, Mark Davis cornered her to agreeing with him that the 9/11 truth movement is a “despicable paranoid cult” who have “horrible, hateful beliefs” about America. Unfortunately for her, she “absolutely agreed” with that statement. This finally finished her campaign as a huge portion of her base who had donated time and money to her cause tasted the bitter seed of betrayal.
I have had time to digest all of this and put this into perspective. I am writing this article in hopes that the Republicans of Texas will see the error of their ways. But first, let me just make a quick announcement here. “The Republican Party has been hijacked!!” Just as they have most recently hijacked the Tea Party as well. It is no longer the Grand Old Party of conservative values, small government and fiscal responsibility. It has been hijacked by the Neocons and turned into the war-mongering, fear-inducing, police state party of Big Brother. You have been duped, swindled and sold a bill of goods which is rotten to the core. You had a golden opportunity to get behind and elect a candidate who stood for the conservative ideals of old and you chose otherwise out of a belief that has been ingrained into your consciousness by Fox News, the main stream media and the Neocons controlling the message for the past 8 ½ years. It’s time to wake up and take a look at the scientific facts which have come to light since 9/11 and conveniently ignored and swept under the rug by the corporate controlled “media” machine in America.
Just two weeks ago, a 38 city, 6 country press conference was held by Richard Gage of Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth. It was completely ignored by the majority of the press and only got fair coverage by The Washington Times, former Wall Street Journal editor and co-founder of Reaganomics, Paul Craig Roberts, and a TV news station out of Canada. What is wrong in this country when a story which should have demanded front page headlines and lead-in stories on the news, gets completely ignored? Good question, right?
So who is Richard Gage and Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth? All you need to know can be found at their website. But in a nutshell, he is a man who has gathered a team of scientists from around the world to look at the scientific anomalies of 9/11 and put them to the scientific method. They began with simple questions like how did 2 planes take down 3 buildings? How did they all collapse into the path of most resistance at free-fall speed, or terminal velocity without the use of controlled demolition? How did another steel frame building, WTC 7, fall at 5:30 in the afternoon in a perfect, controlled demolition fashion in under 8 seconds when it had only few small scattered fires throughout the building? How is it that all three basements had molten steel in them during the clean up 6 weeks after the attacks when jet fuel doesn’t even burn hot enough to melt steel in the first place? Why is it that more than half of the 9/11 commission members have gone on record to state that the investigation “was set up to fail”, “a fabrication of lies”, and “a complete whitewash and coverup’? Good questions, indeed.
In his presentation, Richard Gage uses the scientific method to completely dismantle the official story piece by piece. He exposes scientific and physical proof that a substance called nano-thermite or thermate was used in the destruction of the buildings. A substance that only the US government has access to. The bottom line is, if you choose to believe the official story and the lies printed in the 9/11 Commission Report, you also have to believe that the laws of physics were completely suspended on that day. You can’t have it both ways.
But, the establishment and their minions in the media continue to use 9/11 as the “third rail” of politics to this day. They also use it to demonize anyone who dares question the government. And the masses follow in suit as they believe the propaganda without question. After all, if it’s on the TV or the radio, it’s got to be true. Right?
So, to all the “conservative” talk show hosts throughout the country on AM radio and te-LIE-vision who promote the Neocon line of propaganda and disinformation, and especially Mark Davis of WBAP, I say to you, it is YOU who are the true traitors to this nation. It is you who are the real “despicable, paranoid cult” who have “ horrible, hateful beliefs!” For yours is the cult of NEOCONSERVATISM. The war-waging, fear-mongering, corporatist entity and it’s paranoia of the “Islamo-fascist” threat to their world wide empire. Yours is the language of Doublespeak or the NewSpeak of Orwell’s 1984. You want despicable, you traitorous enemies of the state? How about your ardent and unwavering support of TWO illegal WARS OF AGGRESSION in which over 1.5 MILLION innocent civilian Iraqi and Afghan people have been MURDERED or maimed all because of a LIE! It is YOU who are the despicable ones, you COWARDS!!! Hundreds of reasonable, rational and pertinent questions about 9/11 have STILL NOT BEEN ANSWERED BY OUR “LEADERS”. As far as Mark Davis, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, Rush Limbaugh and all the other talk radio Neocon shills whom have hijacked the once great and conservative GOP ideals, well, your day is going to come. You will be judged for your traitorous actions and beliefs. When the truth comes out you’ll all be ruined. You are all the TRUE ENEMIES OF THE REPUBLIC!
OK, rant over. It needed to be said. And badly. Most Republicans I know are well-meaning people who only want to see the country returned to its former glory. They want small government and a return to the rule of law, our Constitution. They have just been brainwashed by the propaganda machine which is Fox and “conservative” talk radio and the Neocon “ideals” it continues to support.
Debra Medina was different, though. She didn’t play those games. She was a breath of fresh air. She was a true American who saw the problems and had the solutions. She was one of us. She was grass roots and speaking the words we all so desperately wanted to hear from a potential leader. Unfortunately, Medina became a politician three weeks ago after the now infamous Glenn Beck ambush. That was her baptism by fire into the dirty world of establishment politics. Medina is not stupid. She did not get where she did by being stupid. She got there by telling the truth and being a real person. She was forced into the position of defending her entire campaign and platform by the Neocon hate machine and more specifically, Glenn Beck.
She played politics and agreed with Mark Davis because she knew she was speaking to a Neocon, Glenn Beck worshiping base who would instantly write her off if they believed her to be a, God forbid, 9/11 Truther. Those poor Neocon, fake RINOs are a huge voting block here in Texas, after all. That is understandable. But in her defense, if you go to the interview with Mark Davis, she DOES state at 3:41 that “there may be importance to come back and address that” referring to unanswered questions about 9/11 which have been raised by millions of people world wide.
So that brings us to, “just what does all this mean?” Why is the 9/11 issue so important and why is it used as a political football to derail anyone who may pose a threat the establishment oligarchy our government has become? Why does the media and government work SO HARD to continue the cover up and the demonization of those who dare question our vaunted “leaders? What is it they are trying so desperately to hide? Good questions. But what are the answers?
The answers lie in the mirror. I am issuing a challenge to all those of you who still believe the official story and trust in our government to never do anything bad or lie to the people. Look at the questions I and millions of others have posed about 9/11. First, Bunning said forthrightly that not only was he not against extension of benefits, but that he also was following President Barack Obama’s dictum that we "pay as we go," and that there had been no budget allocation for this $10 billion expenditure. While Krugman and the Democrats (and most of the media) were declaring, "It’s only $10 billion," Bunning replied that if Democrats could not even demonstrate some fiscal discipline in a relatively small amount of money, then they were incapable of dealing with the larger budget issues that threaten to swamp our entire country in a sea of unpayable debt.

It has come to our attention, that last Monday (March 1), Dr. Phil Jones, head of the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia (CRU), in a hearing with the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee made a statement in regards to the alleged non-availability for disclosure of Swedish climate data.
Dr. Jones asserted that the weather services of several countries, including Sweden, Canada and Poland, had refused to allow their data to be released, to explain his reluctance to comply with Freedom of Information requests.
This statement is false and misleading in regards to the Swedish data.

You all know how I hate to ask for money, but with the costs of moving to the new server, problems with the membership system, companies going out of business that used to advertise with us, etc. WRH, like everyone else (not being paid to be a government/corporate propagandist), is struggling to make ends meet.
Nobody working on WRH gets a salary. We do not earn anything off of the GCN radio show. This is all done for love of country and the restoration of the Republic. If I could pay for it all out of my own pocket I would do so (as I did the first decade), but the costs for equipment, ISP, bandwidth are going up.

UPDATE: My sincere thanks to everyone who has donated. Every bit helps. I am most touched by the people who sent in donations even though prudence and their own economic situations would have suggested not doing so. As I noted in the letters section, we received donations from people who have lost their jobs, their investments, some on the verge of losing their homes. These are people who really cannot afford to support the patriot movement but choose to do so anyway because they know this is their country, and it is in danger from its own government, and they want their Constitutional Republic brought back. The best way to fight the Big Money influence on government is for all the "little money"; the millions of working and middle class Americans, to band together in opposition to the oligarchs who have murdered what was once the greatest nation on Earth and even now squabble in the halls of Congress over who will get to carve off the biggest chunk of the carcass.

The notion of what is “politically correct” to do at American universities is historically a new problem. Through most of the history of the American republic, the federal government directly funded neither education nor science. Indeed the Constitutional Convention of 1787 considered and rejected proposals that would have given the federal government powers to fund academies or sciences directly or by incentives. Instead, the Congress was only given the limited power to promote science and the useful arts by protecting actual inventors through grants of what we today call “patents”. Education, except for specific federal purposes such as training of military officers, was a state responsibility, or a purely private one. Federal science funding was most typically done by the use of commercial contracts or special purpose applied agencies, such as the Geographic Survey or the Census. For example, commercial aviation developed in the 1920’s and 1930’s in part by responding to the stimulus of Federal air mail transportation contracts. The government provided a market, and commercial technology did the necessary invention and development for its own purposes in reply.
This means of indirect government stimulation was ended by the famous incubator of social innovation we presently call World War II. By the end of that conflict, the United States federal government was deeply involved with direct command and control of the economy, including especially of science and technology. For scientists who otherwise may have had no easy sponsors, and for academic administrators who otherwise had to deal with state legislatures, this new role of Federal government did not appear to be a bad thing. Thus many scientists and engineers both in and out of government who worked together in the war effort found it natural to continue that cooperation. As early as October, 1945 hearings began in Congress on the idea of creating a “National Science Foundation”. The entity proposed was (and became) not a true foundation with separate endowment, but rather a government agency, distributing Federal funds to academic institutions based on advice of scientific advisory panels.
In 1950 this idea became law, but not without opposition. Previously it was believed that the under the constitution the Federal Congress had no role regarding state or privately funded academic institutions. Thus, the most extensive hearings on the newly proposed “foundation” in 1945 were on the issue of “Authorizing a Study of the Possibilities of Mobilizing the Resources of the United States” by the Senate Committee on Military Affairs. While the federal government had no constitutional role in funding science, presumably it did have a proper role in wartime manpower management. This notion provided suitable basis to hold a hearing. Because the explicit constitutional role of Congress in regard to science was to promote science and the useful arts by means of grants of limited term exclusive rights, much of the testimony in these hearings was discussion related to patents and invention, not to manpower. Thus immediately following the War in October and November of 1945 a parade of academics, government bureaucrats and industrial managers from laboratories which had benefitted from government sponsorship in the war testified in the “Manpower” hearings that continued funding was vital to the national interest.
A few serious scientists, such as the respected atomic physicist I. I. Rabi, objected to some of the details of how to implement a single national science funding source. But even these critics missed the most fundamental criticism. When the states and many separate private colleges, independent industries funded their own institutions and research, and stated funded their own institutions independently of central control, there was a great diversity in views and a broad wealth of possible innovation. Observers of both Nazi and Soviet science in the first half of the century certainly had good reason to believe that central control of funding was a threat to independence of mind. Imposition of a single national science funding source created the threat of imposing a single national ideology of what would be “correct” to think about.
But not only did proponents of the new “foundation” not predict the dangers, some actually advocated the Soviet system as their model. In the first day of hearings the second scheduled speaker was Irving Langmuir, Associate Director of the Laboratory of the General Electric Company. While praising the American economic system, he also noted the “obvious necessity for Government control of some features of our capitalist system”. How to improve things? “I was particularly impressed by the tremendous emphasis placed upon incentives in Russia today.” He mentioned chauffeur driven cars for the top scientists, and secret election of scientists to the academy. “They have a remarkable system of incentives”.
Given the fears of the day — unemployment and the horrors and wonders of science including radar and The Bomb — a bill creating a national science bureaucracy passed in 1947. But the then President Harry Truman was not impressed. He vetoed the Act with the following explanations: “The proposed National Science Foundation would be divorced from control by the people to an extent that implies a complete lack of faith in democratic processes” and “…the bill would violate basic principles which make for responsible government.”
The academics and their allies in Congress immediately renewed the campaign. One critic, Frank B. Jewett, the President of the National Academy of Sciences, thought that “… the [new] bill is substantially the old bill modified merely to meet the President’s principal [technical] objections.” Jewett’s complaints included “…I do not think that a convincing case has been made out for so radical and dangerous a divergence from the established proven method … as the creation of a tax-supported politically controlled Foundation would be.”
Probably, opponents of the revised Act were not opposed to the federal role in science, so much as to accommodating President Truman by changes in the Act which imposed “responsible government” as Truman saw it. The power of presidential appointment at the top of the agency was strengthened, meeting Truman’s constitutional objections. This may be the “political control” which worried Jewett. But the academic committee “peer” system, literally a system of academic soviets or worker’s committees, was left in place, and still holds the effective power of purse within the agency. Thus caution on the side of liberty did not prevail. The National Science Foundation Act of 1950 was passed and signed to law; similarly structured “Institutes” were soon also established in health and biological sciences. And, especially in the less established fields which certainly include the social and “policy sciences,” the critics have proven to be correct. Single national ideologies for entire fields of study, and equally importantly, the institutional means to enforce these ideologies, were created when the National Science Foundation was created.
Consider the institutional devices created or reinforced by the National Science Foundation, its review practices and its personnel policies. Although not required by law, as a matter of practice essentially all Foundation science project awards are to academic institutions. These institutions receive money for expenses of “overhead” on the project, computed as an additional payment equal to a percentage of the direct costs of that project. Awards are made by a decision process managed by a program director. A program director is a temporary government employee, usually a tenured academic on temporary leave from their home institution for the period of their directorship. The program director is advised by a panel of “peers”, who are normally employed by academic institutions. The directors and reviewers are placed with the advice of private membership associations of academics. The opinion of a particular reviewer is then “secret,” but primarily from the person whose proposal is being reviewed. The program director and therefore for practical purposes the management of the non-government private associations, and also, the academic institutions who employ the reviewers, do know who made which recommendations. Appeals of decisions are reviewed by essentially the same people who made the initial decisions.
The potential for abuse in this kind of system is obvious. It is no surprise that nearly all awards are made to academic institutions, and that high rates of “overhead” payments to such institutions are common. Inbred ideologies of “correct thinking” quickly evolved … the system is in fact hardly more than a federally funded secret society. Such closed systems invite thought control through dispersion of Great Mysteries, and indeed, are well suited to control of a church, or the operation of a one-party state. A self-replacing elite manages the maintenance of a private code of secret knowledge through semi-secret committees which control lives and careers of individuals. The recent experience of funding “global warming” and “climate change” “research” is a good example of what has resulted from such controls.
But this is also no accident. Creation of a uniform ideology for the social and policy sciences was a goal of many of those who sought creation of a single national science fund. One clue about this comes simply by examining discourse involving the resulting ideology, called “the philosophy of science,” was put. The phrase “the philosophy of science” is nearly always stated in academic discourse using the definite article “the,” and almost never using the indefinite article “a.” Inappropriate use of the definite article in all contexts conveys a belief that “the” approved philosophy was the only possible One Known Truth. It is hard to believe serious scientists acted on the seemingly ludicrous purpose of finding the One Known Truth of science, merely because the structure of the ideology or of the language in use seemingly requires it. But meetings for that purpose are well documented. For example, in the second volume of his autobiography I Am a Mathematician, Norbert Weiner, the mathematical prodigy and theorist of control systems, mentions meeting with other scientists including for example the anthropologist Margaret Mead in the late 1940’s. The contents of these meetings, which occurred among those two and others, was reviewed in a book with the unusually descriptive title Constructing A Social Science For Postwar America, The Cybernetics Group, 1946 – 1953, by Steve Joshua Heims, MIT Press, Cambridge Massachusetts, 1993.
Except for the political uses to which the results were put, these meetings and the attempt to create a single ideology for all of science simply continued a popular European pre-war philosophical trend, often called “positivism”. This philosophy asserts that all science has a common core of ideas shared among all fields. The object of positivist philosophy was to discover this core. Taken as a philosophy, this topic merits serious review, and is in many ways true. It is by no means however the only possible truth discoverable about science. Nor is it the case that once some common core of ideas might be found among certain scientific fields that no further thought is necessary other than applying the thus discovered One Known Truth. Indeed, that form of enquiry is the opposite of science.
The people who initially took control of the United States’ new national science institutions where positivists. They believed they knew to a moral — not merely scientific — certainty that they held a Unique Truth. And whatever they actually believed, it was certainly a political convenience to be able to control an organization through the use of secret committees — the soviet model literally applied! Thus the first “politically correct” government sponsored ideology was imposed on all of science, but especially on the social, economic and policy sciences.
The practical effect of creation of the national science institutes in the early 1950’s was therefore to place social and policy “sciences” under the control of a political alliance of people with the will and means to suppress ideas. Thus American social science today consists almost entirely of a weird (and politically left-oriented) collage, of whatever happened to be on the minds of early advisors to the science institutes. For some fields or sub-fields, if those early ideas happened to have been productive, then progress may have since been made by building on them. For other fields, if the original ideas happened to have been useless or wrong, then no progress can have been made because any deviations have been systematically eliminated. The ideology also systematically excludes developments that are plainly recognizable as scientific in the sense of being both testable and tested. Thus entire subject matters of demonstrably correct, predictive and tested social science are unpublishable in the United States. Because the American ideology views these areas as inherently impossible, the fact of their existence does not form proof of their possibility.
Thus, the political idea that academic institutions are proper devices for creating and enforcing narrow ideologies became widely accepted, and the means for enforcement widely established. The necessary foundations for what today is called “political correctness” were laid in the name of science. Diversity of political thought in academic institutions was largely eliminated. This is witnessed in part by the fact that members of a single political party, the Democratic Party, today occupy most positions at most academic institutions. It is an interesting historical speculation whether this result is an accident. Given the vehemence of President Truman’s political objections to the form of a National Science Foundation in 1947, already cited, why would he then sign essentially the same Act in 1950? One explanation is that by 1950 Truman knew two political facts: the activism supporting the Foundation had not gone away, and that Truman’s term was constitutionally limited with no guarantee that a Democrat would follow him to office; in fact, a Republican, Eisenhower, did so in 1952. Since Truman already clearly understood the anti-democratic (small “d”) nature of the institution proposed, perhaps he reasoned it was better to have the Foundation controlled by the Democratic Party, then to risk allowing a Republican successor the same opportunity should the Act be passed again after he left office.
Whether or not the intent, today more than eighty percent of all academic positions are held by Democrats, while only about ten percent each are held by Republicans or independents; in some institutions, no Republicans have been added to the faculty for several decades. This would seem to fulfill the criticism of the NSF cited above. Though the rigidly controlled ideology the scientific critics feared was a scientific one, derived from the actions of the peer review system, that that system also happened to imply political control by a single political party and has become a serious harm to democracy.
The present study is not the only one to conclude that something systematic is removing American intellectual diversity, and to note the consequences on ideological rigidity. There is also this devastating assessment of American policy science with national security implications by a Adda Bozeman, an analyst of American international military and political intelligence:
This challenge … has not been met by the academic and political elites of the United States. This failure in the perception of reality has been aggravated by a widespread acquiescence in essentially irrational trends — the inclinations, namely, to dissociate values from facts, to treat values as if they were general norms, and to assume that privately or locally preferred values are also globally valid norms. … Further, they suggest that the United States has begun to resemble Don Quixote … it is fighting windmills and losing its bearings in the real world.
One should carefully note that this was written in 1992. Events since then have proven those words prophetic.
The problem we address is the process of collective thinking, which is anti democratic to its core and was so recognized by President Truman in 1947. The best remedy is removal of enforced centralized American policies for academic research, and other national controls of education in all forms. As a matter of constitutional policy fixing the academic problem means instituting policies which are based on the proper powers of the Federal government for the purposes for which intended, and removing Federal exercise of powers it does not possess. The Federal power of the patent is specific, and is intended to protect actual authors and inventors by grants to the creators of exclusive use for limited times. The system established by existing Federal granting authorities is the opposite, certainly in practical effect: it allocates rights from actual authors or inventors and grants them preemptively and exclusively to politically favored institutions. This is an exercise of a power to allocate economic rights, which the federal government does not possess.
The existence of an ideologically controlled one-party type apparatus within the Federal science and educational establishment is the classically predicted effect when a government dispenses funds, controls individual careers, and thereby controls ideas. The limits on the power of the American Federal government to repress ideas can only be restored by a return to the constitutional framework of limited federal powers. This framework has no federal role in control of academic institutions nor education.
